Sports media connection transcends borders

Our trip is based around covering the Indiana men’s soccer team, but Monday was another great experience: being able to talk and interact with students in Mexico at the American School Foundation.

We shared our experiences at Indiana University and answered insightful questions from interested students. We also got to meet and listen to John Sutcliffe, a prominent Hispanic ESPN reporter.

Our day once again started out at Indiana men’s soccer training, which took place at the American School, instead of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where it had previously been. While the team trained at the American School Foundation, many students from the school gathered on the sidelines to watch IU on their field.

It’s not every day we get the chance to visit a school in a foreign country, and it was cool to be the “experts” as we talked to kids who were interested in what we are doing in sports media.

We started off in a more formal setting where Sutcliffe, along with Galen Clavio, spoke to a group of students about advice and media in general. Sutcliffe also shared some of his experiences from his career at ESPN.

During our talk with students, we tried to give our perspective on how we go about our business as student journalists, what we have done and advice on how to get started. They asked insightful questions, and we tried to answer them to the best of our ability.

It was great to be able to represent IU and tell kids about the opportunities it has provided us.
