Get involved early and often

NBC Studios is home to some of the media industry’s biggest names, such as “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” and “Saturday Night Live.”

We visited MSNBC and spoke with media professionals including IU alumna Sheara Braun, BAJ’94. Braun is a producer on the nightly news program “All in with Chris Hayes,” a show she has worked with for over a decade. We were joined as well by Christian Alicea, director of “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt,” and Trymaine Lee, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and MSNBC correspondent. The three offered tremendous insight into the stresses of the daily news cycle and how they each wound up working at NBC.

We asked them questions about their job requirements, tips for getting into the industry and where they see media as a platform going in the future. They offered inspiration with a very clear message: Get as many repetitions in whatever you are interested in as you can.

They all worked incredibly hard to become leaders in the media field over many years, and they offered perspectives about how we can one day hope to be where they are. Even though we are all still college students, we began to get a look into the career of a media professional.
