News writing in the hospitality, lodging industry

Being halfway through my internship program, I have learned a lot and gained many new journalistic skills.

My internship is mainly news writing. I have written numerous articles on hospitality. Prior to this internship, I did not know anything about the behind-the-scenes world of the hospitality and lodging industry. My supervisor has taught me so much about that world, and I have gained a lot of knowledge on that topic. It is quite interesting to learn about the business side of hotels, rather than the tourist aspect.

I have taken a course or two throughout college that helped prepare me for this internship, which has helped me greatly. With that being said, it is always good to put your skills to the test and see if what you are doing is actually correct. The feedback that my supervisor has given me thus far makes me very confident in my writing. It feels good to learn all this information, then take it out into the real world and test it out, and then end up being successful at doing so.

Another new skill that I have had to work on is how to un-Americanize my writing. It’s so interesting to me that the U.K. and America spell words differently, or write differently overall, and I have had to adapt to that. I would not say it has been hard, but it definitely has been something that I have to keep a close eye on to make sure words and different word spellings don’t fall through the cracks. This skill will definitely be useful in the future if I plan on pursuing a career in London or the U.K.
